A recent report has indicated that well over a million Brits will be heading off on a winter sports holiday in the 2007/2008 season. Winter sports holidays are exciting and exhilarating, but also carry an increased risk of injury, and experts estimate that of the Brits that head off on a winter holiday this season around twenty thousand will end up getting injured. Reports suggest that during the last season around one in every fifty participants sustained injuries due to the nature of the sports.
Industry officials are now urging holidaymakers to bear in mind the important have having adequate insurance cover given the high risk associated with winter sports. This includes the increased risk of injury as well as an increased risk of damage to belongings and equipment. Many people that head off on winter sports holidays assume that they are automatically covered with their standard insurance cover. However, in many cases specialist cover is required, and therefore consumers need to check with their provider as to whether they are actually covered or not.
An official from the Association of British Insurers stated: ‘You might have an annual policy from your summer holiday or from your bank, so check if it covers winter sports.’
Consumers should check with their provider whether they have adequate cover for winter sports activities, and this includes additional protection for their equipment, which is often expensive and very costly to replace if damaged or lost.
In most cases standard travel insurance does not provide cover for specialist holidays such as winter sports, so this will need to be added on to the cover in order for holidaymakers to enjoy the increased protective cover required for winter sports. This can be easily done by contacting the insurance company by phone. Those with no current travel insurance cover in place will need to arrange specialist winter sports cover and ensure that they do not just take out standard cover.
